The Lake District - Half way and only 6 months to go.

Well today is the half way point. Over 5,000 miles cycled, 237 birds on the year list, 158 RSPB and 8 WWT reserves visited.
The next six months will see me cycling up the west coast of Scotland, going into central Scotland twice to visit Loch Lomond and Abernethy Forest/ Cairngorms, before heading to the north coast via Loch Shiel. Durness to John O'Groats and then onto Orkney in August. September and October on Shetland and Fair Isle and then the long cycle down to Norfolk before finishing in my native West Midlands.
It's been a fabulous six months and many thanks to all of the wonderful people I have met.
We live in such a beautiful, diverse country and to explore it so completely is a pleasure and a privilege.
So a few more miles to go, 63 birds to get, more people to meet and more places to see. Who knows, I may even find Ellie!

A little near death scenario to keep me thinking.

It is now Wednesday the 4th of November. I am in a hotel room just south of Aberdeen being a little nesh as it is raining outside. Last Saturday I experienced the worst moment I have ever had whilst cycling. The police are involved but the chances of a prosecution are extremely slim. Two Days, 3 RSPB reserves, 3 new year list birds and 3 fabulous people encounters.

Wednesday 28th January From a comfortable night at Fishbourne, near Chichester, in a room called Tiberius, the cycling was tough as there was now a strong westerly wind hitting my face. Please let me have the wind behind me one day. To Thorney Island and the checkpoint for the Ministry of Defence. I was given instructions from the officer on charge on where to go and found the west seawall that would lead me to Pilsey Island RSPB reserve. A lovely lady allowed me to hide my bike and belongings at her house and despite torrential rain and a strong gale, I set off. Getting through the security fence, I found it difficult to stay upright as the wind battered me and the mud on the path was deep and slippery. Great fun! St Austell in Cornwall to Clawton in Devon. Fog, rain and hills!

Wednesday 25 h February Not much to report on the day really. It was spent trying to get into Devon, successfully. The cycle from St Austell to near Clawton in Devon was tough with poor weather and occasional low cloud fog. Mind you the day started well with a new bird for the year list. As I cycled north along a B road towards Bodmin there was a clearish stream cascading down the hill. As I came to a clear part where one could see the rocks a dipper was on one particularly mossy rock. Brilliant! Bird number 152. Or is it? That Kumlein's gull I saw way back in Littlehampton. It's a sub-species of Iceland gull isn't it? Of course it is so can I count it on the year list as an iceland? I haven't yet and if I can that would be the bogey bird from 2010 out of the way.
